FRINGE Festival Local Stars

The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival--one of my all-time favorite events--is in full swing at venues in and around Loch Haven Park in Orlando. Seminole County is well-represented at the 26th annual festival, with riveting performances from a critically acclaimed Steampunk theater troupe and shows performed by three local high school thespian troupes.

Phantasmagoria, a storytelling troupe with a sexy Gothic flair, was founded in 2010 by John DiDonna, a resident of downtown Sanford and a longtime actor, playwright, director and theater professor. The troupe is presenting a mesmerizing show titled "Wickedest Tales of All." This polished production melds horror stories from literary giants such as Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens with dance, music, stage combat, and large-scale puppetry. Tickets are $12. Attendees must also purchase a $10 Fringe button.

Remaining Performances:

6:45 p.m., Wednesday, May 24

11:59 p.m., Saturday, May 27 (at the festival's Orange Venue in the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, 812 East Rollins Street)

Thespian troupes from three local high schools are also performing at this year's Fringe Teens Showcase.

Lake Howell High will present "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, May 27. The comedy-drama is an unauthorized parody of the works of Charles M. Schulz. The play imagines characters from the "Peanuts" comic strip as teens who are grappling with issues such as drug use, bullying, and eating disorders. (Photo from the play featured at top)

Lake Mary High will stage  "A Year With Frog and Toad" at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 28. The whimsical musical, based on Arnold Lobel's children's books, is about the friendship between a cheerful frog and a grumpy toad.

Winter Springs High will perform "This Side of Heaven" at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 28. The comedy-drama is about two newly-disabled teens who meet during a physical therapy session and go on to forge a relationship.

The high school performances will be at the festival's Teen Venue at the Orlando Repertory Theatre, 1001 East Princeton Street. Tickets are $5, with proceeds going to the schools' drama departments. Patrons must also purchase a $10 Fringe button.
