Our Favorite Summer Movies

Featured Photo from Our Favorite Summer Movies

As a homeschool kid with a stay-at-home mom and three younger siblings, summers growing up usually meant lots of out-of-the-house activities and family “field trips” to places like the library, the Science Center, The Orlando Rep, and friends’ houses that had pools. But one of us kids’ favorite outings was the $1 summer movie classics and double features that some local movie theaters would play. Thinking about some of our favorite summer movies, the Lake Mary Life Publishing staff offers up the ones we’ve watched on repeat for years.

I remember watching Dirty Dancing every day in the summer with my cousins. An edited version was on TBS every morning. My cousins were staying with us and we'd watch it every single morning for weeks. I was a late sleeper so I only caught the 2nd half of the movie every day. It wasn't until I was older that I actually saw the movie in its entirety.

* Four of our female staffers actually chose Dirty Dancing as their favorite summer movie! In addition to Samantha, Heather Loomis, Pam Neff, and Jill Duff-Hoppes identified the Patrick Swayze flick as their ultimate summer indulgence. As Jill said, “Find me a teacher like that, and I'll sign up for dance lessons immediately!”

Chip Colandreo

Spaceballs for me. It's my favorite movie of all time, and I believe the first time I saw it was at summer camp at Westmonte Park in Altamonte Springs. Which, you know, is ironic, considering the movie is completely inappropriate for kids. (Samantha's note: "Chip and I watched Spaceballs like 500 times together as youngsters!")

Pam Neff Since Sam chose Dirty Dancing (Love!), I'll have to go with my second fave, Beaches. I could watch it on repeat even though it makes me bawl my eyes out!

I remember seeing Endless Summer in the theater as a kid. It is the consummate summer film. I know I'm dating myself – no shame, though. It really was so fun. I bought my daughter the movie poster for her room when she was young and bought the DVD so she could experience the lighthearted, take-life-as-it-comes beauty of youth.

The Great Outdoors - it’s just so funny! We always watch it together as a family. It’s about a man who tries to take his family on a summer trip in the woods on a lake and all kinds of crazy things happen.

The summer my cousin introduced me to the Hayley Mills version of The Parent Trap, I was hooked. I became completely obsessed with the story and when the remake launched with Lindsay Lohan, that’s all I wanted for Christmas that year! I mean, let’s get real, who wouldn’t want to be Maureen O’Hara?

It was June 16, 1978, when the movie Grease came out. I actually grew up with John Travolta. So, I flipped over this movie and ran out to buy the album. I knew every song. My mother and John Travolta’s were best friends and my mother went to the Grease premiere with his parents. I remember asking her about it and she said that it was fantastic and that she sat next to someone famous, Carly Simon, who is one of my absolute favorite singers. I remember dreaming about acting out the last song, where Sandy becomes super hot, with someone. I’ve seen the movie at least 15 times. It's a classic! But more stories about growing up with John and his family another time...
